Plan a Hilton Head Island trip

Hilton Head is the original master-planned golf island: bike paths under the live oaks, the candy-striped lighthouse behind Harbour Town's 18th, and two dozen courses inside the gates. It skews slightly older and more families-and-couples than Myrtle, with better restaurants and a marquee anchor - Harbour Town - that's worth every cent of its tour-venue green fee.

Calendar warningRBC Heritage (PGA Tour, mid-April): Harbour Town closed ~2 weeks, island lodging spikes. Verify exact dates yearly.

The courses, graded

Tiers are our editorial call: what's worth the green fee versus filler. Constraint badges are researched facts.

$350–$450Pete Dye with Jack Nicklaus

Dye's tight, brainy tour classic where 280 straight beats 320 crooked - the antidote to bomb-and-gouge. The lighthouse 18th into the harbor breeze is a top-10 finishing hole in golf.

$250–$350Jack Nicklaus

A Nicklaus stunner under the Spanish moss across the bridge in Bluffton. Walking-encouraged with caddies - but access effectively requires staying at Montage Palmetto Bluff. The splurge day-trip.

$110–$180Robert Trent Jones Sr.

The 10th's lagoon-to-ocean view is the island's postcard. Wind off the Atlantic gives a 6,700-yard course real teeth after lunch.

The island's only true oceanfront holes plus a full Love Golf Design rebuild - the clear #2 inside Sea Pines.

When to go

Spring is glorious and busy; RBC Heritage week (mid-April) sells the island out. Fall is warm, cheaper, and hurricane-aware. Summer is hot/humid family season.
